hi there

In June i did my interview and received my CR1 spouse visa

We plan to emigrate to the united states this september.
Just wondering because i did a J1 visa 10 years ago and received a Social Security Number then, would this SSN be reactivated immediately after I arrive in the United States or would I need to still wait the 30-60 days for my Green card before I em eligible to work/open a bank account etc?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!

If you have a SSN - you have a SSN :-)

Oh, and since you arrive on a CR1 - you're visa will be endorsed and function as a temporary green card until you receive the actual card.

I guess i will know when i visit the Social Security Office :P

It was never de-activated.

maybe that is the wrong word i used.

After my j1 expired after 90 days 10 years ago I am sure my SSN was "restricted" or whatever until my CR1 visa was approved.

What do you mean it expired? A SSN is for life.

i meant my j1 visa, not my ssn

Sorry. Anyway. You can use your "old" SSN without restriction immediately upon entering. As I previously mentioned, your endorsed visa will act as a temporary green card immediately when you enter the US. Meaning, you are free to seek/obtain employment and any other LPR benefits.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Off topic but how did the interview go? I'll probably be in a position to do mine in the next few months so would be good to hear some recent experiences.

its not an interview per say

where you go in is like a post office you just stand behind a counter and talk to a guy on the other side

first time they call you up it's too submit originals of documents/passport/photos etc

then you sit back down

they call you back up again

they will ask you just basic questions about how you met your spouse and where you plan to live etc

you then sit back down and then they call you back up and will give you your result.

I was there for like 2 hours cos they were busy with a bunch of J1 students doing their interviews but I'd say now it would not take as long.

Best of luck with your interview! :)
