My wife is going to her biometrics appoointment next week. I wonder if it is possible to have her passport stamped at that distant office then, showing that her permanent residence status has been extended a year? (We got the letter of extension for one year last week.) Or do we have to make a special appointment for another time? I just called the field office we are going to for her biometrics appointment to ask, and all I got was endless menu choices, which never led me to a live person to ask.

The letter is all you need. They will not be able to stamp your passport there. If you insist on having a stamp (and I'm not sure if they would even do it for you since you got the extension letter) you would have to schedule an InfoPass appointment with your local office and speak to an officer.

How would one prove its status (and are yet to recieve the extension letter?) when travelling and working after the GC expiration date?

You won't necessarily have to prove your status if you are currently working. I am working and my conditional GC expired last December, but my employer has not asked to see my NOA letter. They know that I have applied for my 10-year GC.

If you want to travel outside the U.S. and don't have the NOA to show the POE officer when you return to the U.S., then you will definitely have a problem. The letter is required to re-enter the U.S. once your conditional GC has expired.

It took one month for my NOA to arrive after I sent in my I-751 application.

I guess my concern is that being that I am a resident (whether that be conditional or not I don't think matters as I have filed my paperwork prior to the expiration date on my card and are entitled to an extension) I don't understand how the government can limit my travel. I do plan on travelling and have infact paid over $4,000 for an overseas trip in early May and the chances of me having my NOA are slim.

If you applied for your I-751 in mid-March, you should definitely have your NOA before early May. I would think you should be receiving it in April sometime.

If you don't have the NOA which extends your conditional PR status, I doubt you will be allowed to re-enter the U.S. upon your return.

You may want to make an InfoPass appointment if you haven't received the NOA by the middle of April.

Do you mind me asking where you got this information about Local Offices no longer giving the stamp? I'm reading prior posts and I am not seeing anything supporting this.

I guess I'll keep ya'll updated. I have an InfoPass appointment for the 30th of March and I guess if they don't give it to me that date, I'll make another in late April and beg! :P

hmm, I just stumbled over that at uscis the other day; if I find it again I will add it to this thread.

However, if you have an emergent travel or work need that requires evidence of your status (say you do not get your NOA in time for planned travel), you may request a stamp at your DO and likely will recieve it.

The US government is NOT limiting your international travel--there IS a solution.

It's very simple. Make an InfoPASS appointment to have your passport stamped. My husband did it since we didn't receive his NOA before his trip. We would have done it anyway since a letter and a passport is much easier to lose than just a passport... He has since travelled to Europe with the stamp 3 or 4 times.

The whole process took a few minutes. There is no need to cancel your trip or worry.

mspencer,

Biometrics are done at ASCs. ASCs do not do this sort of thing. Some ASCs are co-located with a District or Sub office where you might ask about the stamp, but others are stand-alone.

You got a phone number for a local field office? From your description of the phone menu it sounds like you may have called the NCSC.

What did your husband have to bring with him to show that he did file his I-751? Did he bring plane tickets? Did he bring a copy of the I-751, a cancelled check?

Thanks!

We brought his expiring green card and his passport along with the application copies and proof of delivery from the USPS. I don't remember them even asking to look at it. We told the USCIS person that he was travelling and needed the stamp and so she stamped it. The NOA came after he had been back and gone and back again! It took about 2 months for the NOA to arrive.

YMMV.

Hi,

I got my bio-metric appointment for March 29th in Atlanta, GA office.

i thought i could get my one year extension stamp there.

But by research, i fould that these two offices are not same. In some local offices they can be sharing same office.

In Atlanta, GA they are located 15 miles a part.

And for one year extension stamp, you have to take appointmnet through InfoPass online...And you need the one year extension letter from INS.

Thanks.

You don't need the letter if you're travelling or need the stamp but your letter hasn't arrived yet and your greencard is expiring. Does that make sense??
