OCI card in lieu of the PIO card

Hi All,

I am a Indian citizen with a US Green Card.

My wife and my child both have PIO cards issued before before January 8, 2015.

I see on the Cox and Kings Global Services / Indian Embassy Website that the last date for OCI card in lieu of the PIO card is June 30th, 2016.

https://www.in.ckgs.us/oci/oci-categories/oci-in-lieu-of-pio-us-minor.shtml

Initially I read that there is no need to change from PIO card to OCI card as any PIO card issued before January 8th, 2015 will be considered as OCI card.

Has this rule now changed? Why are they issuing a deadline for conversion?

What will happen if I do not change from PIO to OCI?

Thanks in advance.

There seems to be some conflicting information. It was supposed to be that the PIO card was going to be considered lifetime but now it looks like you have to change it to OCI. Read this http://www.cgihouston.org/page/display/96/19

My interpretation of the reading says you should get an OCI but this is the Indian government we're talking about. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"The Government of India has published in the Gazette of India (Part-I, Section-I) on 30 September 2014, that a PIO card issued to an applicant shall be valid for his/her lifetime, provided such applicant has a valid Passport.

2. Subsequently, the Government of India has notified on 09 January 2015 that all the existing Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) card holders registered as such under new PIO Card scheme 2002, shall be deemed to be Overseas Citizens of India Cardholders (Merger of PIO & OCI Schemes).

3. In view of the above, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has communicated that all existing valid PIO cardholders (valid as on 30 September 2014, the date of notification of lifelong validity for a PIO card) are expected to apply for an OCI card in lieu of PIO card till 30 June 2016."
