Do I have to import my car to the US?

If I didn't formally import my car into the US at the time I drove it in, do I still have to import the vehicle? I'm in Kansas and my husband is telling me that I don't need documentations from CBP to register the car, just stuff like the title/bill of sale and such. I feel like it seems a little too easy, and it could somehow backfire in the future. Am I overthinking? If I am able to register it without formally importing, will I ever need to formally import?

Yes you nees to import it. You have a year to import it. Otherwise you cant register it in the USA.

you may get away with registering it at first, but when you go to renew, it won't work, and you'll then have to go to a POE and import it. May as well do it at the beginning.

Yes, I think I got away with it once because it was a small town and they didn't know to ask for the import docs at that DMV. When it got to state headquarters, however, they flagged it and didn't allow me to renew.

I registered 2 Canadian cars in Florida, no Import documents were needed.
