After doing some research, my fiancee(Iranian refugee in UN resettlement program, temporarily in Turkey) and I (a US citizen) are worried that our application for a K-1 visa may be denied on the basis that (being a refugee) she cannot include with the documents, an updated passport (one not exp. within 6 months of the application's submission date, so we're told).

Does anybody have experience with this niche passport issue, or a clue as to how it's resolved?

We don't want to submit anything that will lead to the application packet being rejected. But we're not sure if the expiring passport will be a problem for the visa's purpose. Her passport is already 2 months from its expiration date, but we believe that some K-1 recipients must be traveling with expired passports, right? The process reportedly takes a year, but the offices ask for passports that are only current for 6 more months following packet submission.

Also, couldn't refugees be allowed to present their proof of being "Under International Protection" along with whatever other ID they show while traveling... as maybe a way to balance this problem?

Thanks!

Has she tried to renew her passport?
