Hi everyone! I have some questions about what you can and you can't do with a Tourism Visa, hope you could help me:

1.- As a B-2 holder visa, while you're in the US in a visit, can you volunteer in a public radio station described as a Nonprofit or community organization that requires volunteers for answering the phone? (No payment in return). Is there a specific limit of time to do this?

2.- As a B-2 holder visa, can you take courses? I've been searching that you can take courses as long as they are non-credit and for no longer than 18 hours per week, but there's so many opinions that it's still confusing to me. By the other hand, if you are allowed to do this, is there a limit of courses with those requirements that you can take?

I would really appreciate your help! Thanks.

You cannot volunteer to do anything that resembles work....period. Paid or not, any activity for which a salaried employee would or could do is disallowed by B2 visa holders, no matter what some ethically challenged attorney may tell you. Often making calls for a 'non-profit' is a thinly disguise fund raising activity....lots of people volunteer for things that others are paid to do...

You can take non-degree seeking courses, such as art or dance classes, or ESL, for no more than 18 hours per week, with the idea being that one is a tourist more than one is a student.....

I know people who work for non profits and are paid very nicely.

The common example given of what would be OK is working in a soup kitchen. Your description is far too vague.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
