Hello. My name is Kurt and I live in Wisconsin. I'll be graduating college in May and hope to find a job either before graduation or shortly after. At present I have no income or other assets. I would like to sponsor my girlfriend Brenda, who is Canadian, on a K1 Visa. Assuming I find a job in or around May, will it be possible to use my 2017 taxes (for the 2016 year) as proof of income to sponsor her, or will I have to wait until 2018 to begin the application process? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sponsorship is based on current income not past income. So it would be what you're currently making. ($$/hr x hrs/week x weeks worked per year = current income.) This will be how much you expect to make in a year, not necessarily how much you have made.

Also both consulates in Canada allow for co-sponsors for the K1 visa so you can have your parents, or a friend who does make enough to help sponsor your fiancee at least until you've worked a while. They can even joint sponsor the I-864 during the adjustment of status phase.

Generally on the board we suggest at about 6 months of income to show the job is steady and not-temporary.
