Hi

I am a Greek born national who's family migrated to the USA during the mid 1970s, we had those green cards with no photos, anyway I applied for my us citizenship during 1993, was contacted to pick it up 1994 no problemo, In fact I requested to change my whole name since I am a music artists but they only let me change two, so I picked the first and middle and was advised to go to court to change the family name., so I got a passport with my original family name at that moment,

The same year while in Seattle Washington I requested the court to change my family name, for only $5 bucks compared to $450 in nyc and I sent of this document along with the us certificate for a new second passport with the new family name.

Later while visiting Europe with my geek passport and old name I met someone who I settled down with and had several children, ten years past and I had several passports since, one replacing a lost passport while another renewing sent to me by mail, no problems.

How ever whole registering my children's births I was told I had to prove i lived in the USA atleast five years and I was quizzed by a French secretary to why I changed my name, it's as if she only recognized the time in the us since the new name, not before it,

I was later told to bring $400 dollars to register the kids births etc, with out any guaranty they get a us citizenship, strange, but by the time we got around to it the state dept announced that they closed all the offices outside Marsielle and paris.

Also important to mention me and my spouse are not civilly married, she is French and we want to see if we like to stay in the USA to get away from all this immigration hysteria in Europe,

Anyone know what you normally have to show to prove you lived in the us five years?

You can look up the requirements to pass on citizenship, I am by no means clear if you qualify.

How is your partner intending to move to the US?

Here are some examples of evidence that the state dept. considers acceptable:

* expired passports showing entries into or departures from the United States and other countries;
* school, and employment records;
* tax withholding statements;
* bank, credit card records;
* frequent flyer records;
* boarding passes;
* and other such documents that establish periods of U.S. physical presence

Yeah I get yah,

Maybe it's best we visit the US together and see if we like it first, I know I will but you never know with someone from france where healthcare, social security and other benefits are way better then the USA., then we can ask lawyers in Texas more info,

Not sure you, you do get it.

She can visit presumably using the VWP. Obviously visiting somewhere is different to living somewhere.

How do you intend for her to stay here?

What do you want to ask Lawyers?

My problem with all that is that I obtained my citizenship after surrending a green card from the mid 70s, passing certain requirements before 1994 which also included having no criminal records for the last 7 years, the same phone number, address, and job for a number of years etc etc and to think that getting my citizenship alone is not enough proof that I was in the country for a measly five years seems totally crazy with a K to me, it's typical american politics, playing with everyone's head, it's not even cheap!

I have to pay for registering the birth as well as passports., eh.

I had several friends from the uk and japan in the past visit the us and worked out a visa to stay, eventually one had a kid and established a citizenship after starting a company,, the us is not as hard to move to as people make it out to be, anyone can come from Mexico it's leaving the us and us citizenship that I find more difficult,, if I wanted to it's almost impossible, I once tried giving the citizenship up asking at a us consulate in the uk and I was told it did not matter even if I burned my passport, sooner or later the us will tax me if I made more then 92k in one year., I think it's what the number was.,they hang on to you for taxes even if they say you can't prove you lived in the us for atleast five years and yet have three expired passports.

Ohhh

Yeah ok who while I posted here I got news from the cunsulate that it's ok to just pop in with kids and do all this with the docs like the citizenship certificate, name change and passports..... Weird no? , it's like a random " give this chap a hard time" and then just charge him.... So I basically already have what's required as proof to show I lived int he us five years min since my adult age, what surprised me is they don't care about tax returns., I was like what?

Tax returns come into play for sponsorship.

I was told it's not good enough to prove you where in the USA for five years because you could live outside the USA and still file taxes as a US citizen...keep paying taxes but don't come back to the states is what it sounds like?
