My fiance left the RAF as a Sargent after fifteen years. She had her discharge papers but she sent away for her records anyway just to make sure she would have everything and anything they could possibly need. It took about a month and a half to get them back. She got a stack of papers about 2" high in a big folder all certified. It had all the reviews from her superiors and all the medical information when she had cancer which was a good thing for her medical. The last reviews were how they wished that she would consider staying in the RAF and what an asset she was.

Point being if you were in the military it probably is a good thing to send away for them as there is a wealth of information about you in there that could prove helpful. The medical information was a god send for us as it showed the doctors records and all the treatments and operations she went through and most important to us was that she was cancer free.

This is an excellent recommendation. Not only for the present, but for down the road as well. If you are getting out, take your entire file with you when you go.

Many vets of my husbands vintage are finding that their old records are now lost or destroyed, or misfiled. He's spent the last 5 years trying to track down a copy of his med/milrecs, and they cannot be found. His Ex dumped his, in fact she tossed everything he owned. You may not feel you need these when you are younger, and ten feet tall and bulletproof, but there will come a day when there may be information in those old records you will need. If you cannot produce them, and they cannot be found, it will be impossible to file a claim for service connected illness or injury. If it isn't in the records, it didn't happen.
