There are some very good items that have been mentioned on VJ:

- Letter from employer

- Lease docs

- Asset ownership eg. house/condo, etc.

- Financial evidences eg. bank sttmts, RSP statements, T/Bill, Bonds, etc.

- Current Internet/ phone bills, etc.

- Return travel tickets (if flying)

- ... miscellaneous and that includes your current valid TTC metro pass, student discount cards, Wonderland's Season Pass, and Shopper's Optimum Card .. - haha -- that's a joker item, so don't take it seriously.

I think if you are honest and have "sufficient supporting evidence", you should be fine.

Keep in mind you can have a zillion ties to Canada, and if the POE officer thinks its not enough, or your lying, etc, he can stil deny entry. So have a back up plan just in case that happens!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The advantage that we Canadians have is that you go through preclearance here (at the big airports), so if you are turned away, you're still in Canada and not trapped at the airport.

Thanks guys, this is great info. I'm sure that there's a good chance they won't ask for a ton of evidence, but I hear that Pearson can be kinda tough. When Artie flew to meet me for the very first time in Chicago, we hadn't even talked about marriage or anything like that, so certainly no mention of applying for a visa. It was just a vacation trip for 9 days. When he went to Pearson, they decided to be all hard and mean to him about nothing, and threatening him that they might not let him through... they made him wait in an office and some "supervisor" came in and said "i guess you can go". Artie has a totally clean record and he had never been to the States before. The guy told him it was just procedure to check every few people. I was worried that he would never want to come to the US after that!

As you can see this is why I'm going to be very careful about having him prove the ties. I can only see him 3 or 4 times a year until our visa gets approved, and I'll be damned if they deny him! :P

My main worry is that since he has virtually no bills, loans, cars, etc that it might look like hes abandoning everything. He is just lucky that his family takes care of him, maybe a little too much. He's got a great job though, so I'm just hoping having a great letter from his employer will have enough pull.. I'll have him bring pay stubs and bank statements, etc. as you suggested. Thanks for the help.

I've only gone through Pearson, both Terminal 2 (now defunct) and Terminal 3 and the officers were always okay. Some friendlier than others but all of them were pretty decent and professional.

Another thing he could bring is his tenant insurance policy if he has one. It might count for something. :)

I've gone through Pearson quite a few times and ALWAYS got stopped and questioned. I even called a friend who's a police officer in St Louis and has worked for the FBI , he couldn't find any reason they might stop me.

I now drive over the border and go fly out of Syracuse, MUCH easier drive, Much friendlier Customs officers, although they pull me in sometimes too.

I'm thinking they get confused when your actually honest with them!!

Yeah, after I posted this and took everyone's advice, he was really prepared going through Pearson... of course they didn't ask him a thing other than the business or pleasure question lol ><

We've found out that being honest, yet not saying more than you have to works best - Although its most likely all chance that you get harassed a little more than others. They really don't have to have a reason to pull you to the side...

same way i felt when i went to see my fiance on christmas eve. I was so mentally prepared for all the questions. They did pop like 5-6 questions really fast, but nothing to be worried if youre not lying. I think they do it on purpose to catch liers. I went through Montreal airport.
