- Moved from IR-1/CR-1 Progress to the Canada regional subforum as question is very country-specific and likely to get better responses there -

Eighteen years in the US and I still don't understand Velveeta, TV ads for prescription drugs, only getting 2 weeks paid vacation, or why anyone believes anything they see on Fox "News".

U-pack is cheap for a larger move. Shipsmart is good for small moves without furniture (just boxes of stuff).

i checked out several for a move from hamilton, ontario to reno, nevada

i got quotes online from upack, pods and the relocation group and also had 4 big moving companies come to assess my goods and give me better estimates.

i chose not to go with a self pack company although they were significantly cheaper because i was not prepared to pack the cube myself and wasn't interested or trusting of others for hire to pack it. along with personal belongings I had several pieces of furniture, lots of glass and many mirrors to move.

after reviewing the 4 international companies quotes (atlas, united, north american and allied) i chose atlas. they were: less per pound, offered more insurance for the $, gave me great assurance on their packing/wrapping techniques, offered the best information (the others were in and out quickly and assumed I knew everything about moving which I did not) and had the best 'fine print about additional charges' . ***remember though the agent coming to your house is merely a sales person, a representative, and not the actual packer/mover in most cases.***

the day of the move 3 very mature guys showed up...not young boys and they knew their stuff. after completing the inventory sheets for customs, the driver personally wrapped all furniture inside the house and then again on the truck and did all the packing in the truck while the other 2 did the hauling of my goods. even though the driver, from oshawa, never worked with the 2 guys, from hamilton who did the hauling, everyone was in sync and knew their job. needless to say, i was impressed. that bulkhead was packed very tight!

my stuff, just over 5000 lbs, should be arriving any day now; atlas gave a 7-13 day delivery window. there were 3 more households being moved with my goods (this was the only downside of going with a mover--i did prefer a self contained cargo box). i will update when i have more to report.

hope this helped. :)

I forget that some people haven't moved that much so they don't know much about it.

How much did the quote come out to per pound?

Did you only need to fill out the 3299 and supplemental? Or also a power of attorney?

it varied.per company. i dont have the paperwork in front of me right now but i believe the range was $1.21 to $1.43 but that was just the weight/transportation-distance ratio.

there were other calculations that also went into the quotes. things like crating of special/fragile items such as glass/mirrors, packing of electronics, insurance, additional charges at the other end (which are a scam) etc. even though i the had box saved for my tv i still went with them packing it, if i packed it myself and it got damaged it would not be covered under their insurance. i have a priceless jukebox too and wanted to be sure that it would be safe-so for me having them pack it it was a great piece of mind.

atlas and i completed the 3299 together. it was simple. no poa needed. the office people know exactly what to do. i'm guessing my experience was superior because the office (dundas) i dealt with is small and family owned and everyone knows what everyone is doing. i liked that i wasn't getting misinformation which often comes from large offices.

best take the time to contact a few movers getting quotes (and self packs too if that suits your needs) and go crazy watching youtube videos. united van lines has several to help you understand the process and how you can save $ by packing your own personal items (which I did).

atlas offered me free used boxes and packing paper and as it turns out they gave me a ton (i was short 4 boxes which i got at home depot). i'd suggest doing that cuz boxes aren't cheap. it came handy and saved me some $. all the boxes i got were in great condition. one other company offered me some of their used boxes but somehow i doubt they would have supplied me with the same quantity that atlas did.

lastly...dont underestimate the amount of packing tape you will need...omg...i had a ton but ran out twice!!

if you want more tips...i'd be happy to help :)

I used Upack and I found them to be professional. My stuff arrived in good shape. I did the small cube. I packed about 30boxes (varying in sizes. some picked up from grocery stores and some bought from Staples. Packing tape you can get from dollar store or Walmart) as well as 3 suitcases & computer chair( only furniture) . I could have packed much more as the cube was basically half full. 3 days before I POE'd , they delivered the cube. Called them back to pick up the day before I flew out. I gave them the filled in form 3299(summary of how many boxes and what is inside and its approximate value) ; copy of my passport bio page and k1 visa. Cube arrived as promised ( can't recall how many days at this moment though) at their depot.

Since you are going from Toronto to NY and if you don't mind driving, NLR's idea of UHAUL would be best.

Good luck

What was the cost range of uPack?

Hi, I can't recall the range but I paid about 2700US $ (included gas/ shipping/ taxes/ etc). Had to pay extra $25 US for Custom Admin fee. Estimated days for delivery is 6-8days after pickup day(mine came 8days). Depending on where you are going, you can have them deliver to your place or you can pick up from their depot ( they could not deliver as at the time I lived in an area where their trucks would have a hard time to maneuver). There might be a slight difference between depot pickup and house delivery.
