Hello,

My spouse's N-400 application is taking longer than expected (nothing new there) and it's looking as if it will still be pending when we take a 3 month long trip outside of the US next year. Should an oath ceremony be scheduled during that time is it possible to reschedule it? How long can it be postponed, and does that put at risk the application? Also, does rescheduling only take place in person? Any experience in this matter is greatly appreciated.

You can postpone, and it doesn't reflect negatively on the application, as long as you don't miss the ceremony, but re-schedule before the date.

When I did my interview, the officer specifically mentioned that I should postpone if I had childcare issues (it was quite the trip for us to the USCIS office, and three little kids....). When I got my scheduling letter, there was a paper to send back if you wanted to re-schedule so you should be able to do that by mail, but make sure someone checks your mail while you are gone.

Not sure how long you can postpone, but 3 months should not be a problem.
