Ask on the regional forum if anyone has a free number for your embassy. I know with Paris embassy it's like 12 euros, or something like that, to call. But someone here discovered a free number for them.

To all the people who were so very helpful in this thread, I wish to thank you once again.

My fiancee just got off the phone with the Embassy and the gentleman she talked to very enthusiastically ensured her that we didn't need an extension. My fiancee said he was absolutely sure of this.

So, can I breath a sigh of relief or was the guy an idiot?

I suppose you have already called so this post might not matter, but like someone mentioned you could also email in the future if you need to. It says on the information on this site that emailing is by far the best way to contact London. I emailed London with some queries a couple months ago and they got back to me next day with exactly the information I needed. I suppose if you were requesting an extension you might have been better off calling anyway though. Glad everything worked out though!
