there are areas of the US that say it that way, I think New England and parts of the mid-west. But down here in the south, its r-out, and it just sounds weird coming out of my mouth.
I have a hard time trying to say "route" like Americans do. I just sound stupid when I try, and it hurts my throat, so I just say it like I've always said it the Canadian way, (root) and people look at me like they don't know what I'm talking about.

I work at a newspaper, so the word comes up about 18 dozen times a day :P

I've always said it the "Canadian way"!

I tend to alternate how I say "route" depending on its usage, I think. I probably do this because I've grown up in Texas (so we most likely say the word as "r-out") and my parents are from New York, so I heard them saying "root." It's interesting, really. I never gave it much thought.

My fiance's hardest words are "truth," "true," and anything with the american english oo sound in it. For some reason he can't say -tr, so true and truth come out throo and throoth, with a strongly rolled -r. And his 'oo' sound comes out more french-ified, like when you pucker your lips in an -o shape but say an -ee inside your mouth, like eiioo. The funniest thing is when he tries to say Youtube, and he ends up saying "yow-teeiioobe." Language acquisition is so interesting though: when I try to get him to hear the difference between eeiiooo and oo, he can't hear it. Likewise, he claims I say the Spanish word "pasaporte" with a hilarious accent, when it sounds to me like I'm repeating exactly the sounds he's making

It seems like everyone except americans and maybe some scandinavians and germans have trouble with the american -r sound, like in giRl and fliRt. My fiance certainly can't make it, and I've met a lot of British people who can't make that sound in the middle of words, but put it on the end of words (so that, for example, the name Natasha comes out Natash-er). I wonder why it's such a difficult sound
