Hello,

Some of my friends living in the U.S warned me about giving out my SSN to job recruiters .... especially that i'm still living in my homeland out of the U.S.

my question here is: is it truly risky to provide them with such info? & what if I should get a final job offer, would it be risky then too?!!

thanks in advance!

I would never disclose my SSN nonchalantly. What do they need it for?

Certainly never to just solicit employment. AFTER accepting a legitimate offer and per their employment for benefits and such sure. Some people here have to fill out documents remotely when accepting jobs here...but I would still say that is not the norm...only those w/ corporate cultures based on remote workforce.

I think that job recruiters have no need for your SSN. To be on the safe side, I wouldn't provide that information. I work in HR and we do not need anyone's SSN until they have been officially offered the position. Once they have given you an offer, it is normal to give your SSN for a background check and I9 verification.
