The big moving day is the 23rd!

I have a couple questions though. He has everything packed into rubbermaid containers. Can he just label them #1, #2, #3, etc. and have a list saying what's in each box?

And what paperwork does he need to bring? Just his passport/K1 visa, the sealed envelope he got with his visa, and the list of what's in his boxes?

Thanks Loki!

As for the paperwork... Does he just need the sealed envelope, passport/Visa, Car compliance letter, and the boxes list?

I'm asking because I saw someone else mention his they asked for medical stuff, which I thought they didn't, and I brought that back to the US with me last month!

I'm bringing everything I had all through this journey, obviously along with the sealed envelope and passport/visa. For me it's all been in the same binder the whole way so I keep everything together just in case. If my car was able to get a compliance letter I'd bring that too... but it didn't pass. :(

WOOT!

I know I'm stressing too much about nothing... but I just don't want him to have any issues at the border.

I can't believe moving day is finally coming! I never thought this day was going to happen when we were stuck at TSC for so long!

I'm bringing everything I had all through this journey, obviously along with the sealed envelope and passport/visa. For me it's all been in the same binder the whole way so I keep everything together just in case. If my car was able to get a compliance letter I'd bring that too... but it didn't pass. :(

This was something I was starting to worry about because I brought all the paperwork back to the US with me since Jonathan tends to uhhhh..... "misplace" things from time to time. haha

Congratulations to you both!

We crossed in at the Houlton, Maine crossing. We didn't even think to label everything. Woops! All they had us do was pull off to the side(We were towing a trailer) and come in. Left our 2 cats in their carriers in their car(March, not really warm or really cold) and come into the building. Note: If you have animals you need a clearance from the vet saying they're OK to travel(Not sure about birds though, they're so complicated)

Inside the building I handed them my package, our 2 passports, and the registration to our vehicle. They got us to go back out and let them into the car to check the VIN against what we had, but that was it. They didn't ask us what we had, they didn't check the 2 cats, or anything. They just asked if they had their rabies shots and that was it. I do suggest keeping your visa paperwork/original evidence in easy access, though. The Montreal consulate forgot to include the D-160(I think that's what it's called?) in the package and they required it to cross. Luckily we had a copy of it. We were done in about 45 mins.

It was only a $9 fee to import the car at the border. If you choose not to import it at the time you cross, you have to bring it back to a border crossing when it comes time to do it. We're still waiting on paperwork from the bank to show our car is paid off, so we have a temporary permit, but it'll be about another $1500 to register it here because we have to pay taxes on it again. Apparently the 15% in Nova Scotia doesn't count.

Met 2008. Moved in together 2010. Married 2015. Baby Z joined us 2017 .

For the most part I don't think it's completely necessary as most people seem to not have anyone do a thorough check of their items (looks like B-2-Z didn't!) but other people have suggested it... maybe it's for goods that are following later on/or if a company is shipping the goods for him? I'm not sure but I have done it anyway lol. I think you'll be fine if you didn't. Good luck with his POE

And B-2-Z, I don't need a vet certificate for my bird for land entry, just an appointment with the vet at the border :) Until about 2 weeks ago I would have needed an import permit for him ($$$) due to an apparent outbreak of the avian influenza but that seems to have passed as the website has updated and I no longer require one, thankfully :content:

On his list he should include the serial numbers for things like tv, computer - any major electronic....but honestly they won't even look at it. 9.99999 times out 10 (I'm not even sure I've heard of any VJers coming from Canada who has had their belongings inspected and torn apart) - they just don't seem too worried

Thank you everyone for your replies!

Jonathan came HOME a day early! He had zero problems at the border. They didn't even look in his car or trailer. He said the officer inside filled out all his paperwork, including his car import and just had him sign. They didn't look at his packing list or anything.

So happy to finally have him here!

Hi Clim,

I crossed the border last weekend at Rainbow bridge (for my first stamp) and Detroit (for permanent move). At Rainbow bridge, they asked if I wanted to import the car and I said no. I tried to import the car at Detroit but they had issues with my paperwork so what they told me to do is go back to Toyota and get a new letter. I can then import at any POE afterwards if I wanted to. So I think you should be able to move in without importing the car and then import the car later on. I believe the grace period is a month or two is what they told us. Hope this helps.
