Hi,

As I'm going to apply the US citizenship, I'd like to change my family name to an English family name because it's quite difficult to read and pronounce it.

As in my country allow me to create a new family name, can I create a new English family name here?

What I've to know before I create a new family name, and what are the procedures?

Thank you.

Some names that are already been taken:

Dom Perignon Champagne

Destinee Hooker

Preserved Fish

Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon

100% Naturalized U.S.D.A. Prime American

Here is a good list to draw inspiration from:

Oh! Thanks!

So, I can use any last names on the list or any English last name in this world, right?

I just wonder that I may not use those last names because it already taken.

In my country, people have different last name, if they're not family or relative.

For example, suppose my name is James, can I choose Smith as my last name?

If yes, it mean that, US can has many James Smith and they're not know each other, and they're not a relative as well.

Do I understand correctly?

Thank you.

Correct. My father in law's name is James Smith. But there are many other James Smith (tens of thousands) who he has not met, and is probably not related to.

If "Preserved FIsh" was not taken I would choose that one as it is absolutely ridiculous and has absolutely no meaningful association with it. LOL But on the serious note, I somewhat agree with jeevcy. Choosing a completely random last name seems so useless. Might as well choose one that has meaning to you, or even better. Just choose your husband's last name. At least that has meaning to things and your children and their children will be able to track down their ancestors than having a random last name that has no roots, connections to anything, or anyone and hence just leads them to a dead hole when reaching for their roots and ancestry. Unless you engrave your name change certificate into something that cannot be lost/burnt/fade away....
