Hi guys!

Chris and I (finally) got married yesterday! So of course my holiday is being spent dealing with the last bits of paperwork.

So, heres the fun part. We do plan to stay in the us for 5-7 years while I finish my PhD, but then we want to go back to Germany. We also know that for him to get his Beibehaltungsgenehmigung we have to prove ties to both countries (which we can). In the mean time, to preparation for this, we need to establish that we are married with the German government. On their own website (http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/DE/Infoservice/FAQ/Eheschliessung/04-Heirat%20Ausl%20-%20Gueltigkeit%20in%20D.html?nn=332718) it says we can do this by mailing some documents (no explanation of which) to the main office in Berlin, or we can do it at the consulate here in NYC, who's website gives no explanation how. Basically, its German bureaucracy at its best :)

Does anyone here have any experience registering their marriage to a US citizen in the US with a German consulate?

Thanks!

Congratulations on your marriage, I hope all best luck for you and your husband.

Now for your question my advice is to call the consulate and ask about all the info you need. Thats where you will get the most accurate information for your situation.

Im sorry if I didnt have the answer you hoped for.

I think this is what you are looking for!?:

http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/de/05__Dienstleistungen/03__Familie/Eheregister__S.html

You fill out that form and send it to the consulate along with your marriage certificate, birth certificates and passports (copies).

The form has to be notarized, or you can go to the consulate and sign it there, which I think is a little cheaper.

2012: met the woman of my life

June 2014: filed I-129F

May 2015: visa in hand - got married (L)

June 2015: filed I-485 and I-765

October 2015: EAD

November 2015: Potential Interview Waiver Notice

February 2016: AOS Case transferred to San Francisco office

March 2016: GC in hand (no interview)

Thank you!!! Thats exactly what I was looking for. I found this, but it didnt go into specifics: http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/DE/Infoservice/FAQ/Eheschliessung/04-Heirat%20Ausl%20-%20Gueltigkeit%20in%20D.html?nn=332718 (just in case anyone else ever needs the info...)

They are much easier than Italy. Im a dual citizen US/Italy and to register my marriage with them I have to get new birth certificates for me and Chris, get them certified, translated and an apostille. Same thing with the marriage certificates. What a disaster.

Well head down to the consulate this coming week. Thanks again!
