Didn't change my name.

we got married at the courthouse last month-I am not taking my man's name until I have a big wedding with all our friends and family there!!!

just how I feel

Nothing wrong with that. I'm not changing my name because I have two daughters, ages 12 & 15. I plan to keep my name the same as theirs until such time as they are both married. By then, it might be a moot point. David is completely accepting of this.

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

Haven't changed my name either. At first it was because I didn't want to confuse USCIS. Now it's just inertia and fear of all the forms that I will have to fill out. I had enough of that doing the visa thing!

We filed AOS with Claudeth's married name and once we received official notice from the USCIS (EAD) we went to social security and changed her name there. The worst was getting her new passport from the Philippines, that was a nightmare getting it in her married name!

yeah but my question that everybody missed :P

How many if you needed their SSN to get married ?? I want to get married in Michigan and it says I need a SSN in the identity papers required.

Any of you didnt need it in a state that requires it because you were coming from a different country ?

I don't know if New Hampshire requires it, but I went in and spoke to the town clerk beforehand. She said that, since he was coming from another country, they would just use 999-99-9999 on the form where it asked for SS number. Can you call the town clerk in the city you are planning on marrying in and get that clarified?

It is possible to get a ssn before you get married. But if you plan on changing names, I don't see a point, as you're going to have to change the ssn to your married name. So get married, apply for snn with your married name and then apply for EAD/AOS. In order to apply for AOS you need to have your ssn.

According to Sheriff Uling (Ahmari), he was able to get his fiancee's SS# in about 6 days - at no cost (he waited the 2 weeks after her arrival for her to be in the system). Then after they married she had her name changed through SS and then asked for a card. Even though it's requiring 2 steps, it simplifies the process for SS because all your documentation with the exception of your marriage license is going to have your maiden name. Either way works, but if you are waiting for your SS# to apply for EAD/AOS, the time saved might be worth it.

Didn't change my name.

Who says you need to wait for your SSN to apply for AOS? I don't see that anywhere in the guides or the forms.

I asked that question a few days ago and the responses I got said that you did not need to have a SSN to apply for AOS. Sure hope not, since the paperwork is going out tomorrow!!!

I put "NONE" in that box. I didn't get my SSN until after I had submitted my AOS forms. I changed my name the day I got married. So far I haven't had any trouble changing my name on anything. Just had to show the marriage certificate as proof of name change.

i applied for my SSN a month after I was married, and just before submitting my AOS petition. I personally had no problems.

To answer the original question, I began changing everything to my married name after we got married -- everything I applied fore, I just used the married name. I still have to change my name in my passport.
