I am an American citizen who spent 2014 working abroad. My partner and I moved to the US in Jan 2015 and we got married here in 2015. Do I claim foreign exclusion? Do I file using 1040, 2555EZ and my FBAR for 2014 - as I did in previous years when I was living abroad? Does my partner need to file? Do I claim moving expenses as a deductible (we moved in 2015).

Notes:

  • My partner and I are both currently unemployed. My partner has been unemployed since August last year actually.
  • I brought my partner with me as part of the K-1 application, so we only married in 2015 and he received his SSN here in 2015.

You were not married in tax year 2014, so your partner can't file with you, nor does he/she have any US tax obligations for tax year 2014. Your 2014 return will be just like in the previous years.
