Im flying from newcastle to dublin, dublin to chicago and then on to SF  i know you can do preclearance at dublin, so do i give them my packet? or do i keep it till i land in chicago? confusing! just dont want to hand it in at dublin to be told i need it in US

If your flight has preclearance, then you will go through immigration and customs in Dublin. They get the envelope. When you arrive in Chicago, you won't be herded through the immigration hall.

If your particular flight should not send you through immigration and you just board the plane in Dublin, then you will do it at Chicago.

I'm not sure but I believe it'll be collected in Dublin as you go through USCIS. Having said that however, you need not worry because at the right place and moment the CBP officer will collect the packet from you and keep it.

I've been on pre-cleared flights from Dublin where we had to go through CBP control again upon arrival at JFK. I'm not sure if they do it as a matter of routine of just sporadically. In any case, don't worry. At some point the right person will ask for the packet and keep it.

good luck !

Yes, that is correct. When you go through CPB (US passport control, if you will) they'll check your visa and will ask for the sealed envelope. You don't have to worry about turning it in yourself. :-)

ahh ok. I guess the people who ask to see my visa in my passport will be the ones to take it? all very confusing. Wish i just booked a direct flight haha
