What happens when African-American cops target African-American gangsters.. Or are they also profiling and basically being racists..

Yes, that is still profiling.

eta: although I don't know what you mean by "gangsters" and I suspect you mean people you would perceive to look like gangsters.

what if they are profiling racists? :P

Tell me of one other developed country that has as many no-go zone shitholes areas??

Well you could always try THIS ONE

Nice try.. There is not one area of Melbourne I could not travel through at night..

Yet 1 in 3 of every Australians is a victim of crime? And it has a much higher murder rate than the UK or Ireland. I wonder what can be causing this as you have told us it has no ghettos or gangs in baggy trousers?

i'm just wondering where all the outrage is every time there is a serial killer and we hear that same old phrase by the fbi profile team...

"he's a white male, between 24-45 years old......."

Wearing urban gear means you're more likely to be a gangster? Some of you really need to go spend some time living/working/studying in an urban area.

I hear you there - a trip to my local supermarket almost everyone is dressed like that... I'm used to it now (we lived in a more upscale area in CA), but when you're face to face with those people you have to learn to think differently, otherwise you go around completely paranoid. As usual stereotypes are easy to accept in the absence of a direct frame of reference.

So, the manner in which one chooses to dress tells you nothing about how they may be expected to behave, or with whom they wish to be associated?

I'm willing to bet that a researched psychological profile is hardly the same as an arbitrary determination based on the individual's sub-conscious value judgements.

That rationale is problematic when you are wrong, and its easier to make (and accept) that judgment from afar than when you faced with those people directly on a day to day basis and inevitably are forced to challenge those preconceptions.

I wouldn't assume how someone dresses is an indicator of their behavior and background any more than I would consider it an indicator of intelligence. External value judgements only get you so far after all...

Perhaps because you are talking about two different things.

We have been talking about profiling a group of people based on the colour of their skin or ethnic backgrounds often where no crime has occurred.

The type of profiling you are talking about in the above post relates to an individual who is being sought in connection with a crime that has actually happened.

But as you brought it up you might want to wander over to Google and see how accurate the male profile put out by the authorities prior to the eventual arrest and conviction of Aileen Wuornos was. She admitted to killing seven men, in separate incidents.

Profiling is ineffective and lazy.

it's still profiling........

No it is not. Unless of course you think an unfertilized human egg is the same thing as a chocolate easter egg. After all they are both eggs

not two different things. it's still profiling. unless of course you like being pc and deny such. the alleged killer is almost always said to be a white male......

yet there's no outrage over that. i just wonder how loud everyone would scream if the profile team said "he's a black/hispanic male......"

as usual, it's ok to be pc when the profiling is about a minority......

I don't think the average street cop making a spontaneous value judgment goes in for detailed forensic psychology, which at least has some scientific basis (flawed as it might be).

Which part of one word can have two different meanings is giving you difficulty here?

They are not the same thing they simply share a common name. If you can not work that out then I am sure you will have the utmost difficulty comprehending any of the more complex concepts expressed throughout this topic.

Let me see if I can help you the hood on your car is not the same thing as the hood where some of the alledged gangstas hang out in.;)

So, which person crossing the Israeli border is more likely to be a terrorist, an Arab man or an Israeli woman??

What does it matter? The results of succesful bombings tend to support my position that profiling is indeed lazy and ineffective. If profiling was effective there would have been none.

Call it lazy, call it wrong, but it's VERY VERY effective. When was the last time an Israeli plane was hijacked in the last 40 years?

That's right, never.

is my extension of this arguement causing your synapses to fry? it started off about profiling by the police. i extended it to a profile made by law enforcement when they are looking for a suspect. is it too great a leap for you to follow that?

yes, i know, it's probably difficult for you to stay with me as this addition to the subject that i brought in negates what you've been spouting.
