Hi!

I am new here so please bear with me, I hope someone can help me out here.

I am a Lawful permanent resident since 1980 and now thinking about applying for Naturalization. I have never been involved in any kind of unlawful activity but I am unemployed. I have been unemployed for at least 10 years.

My question is, will this affect my application in any way? Can my application be rejected based on my unemployment?

Also if my parents are making money above the poverty guideline and I live with them but have no income, can I still apply for fee waiver?

Hopefully someone can give me a satisfying answer. Thanks

You do not have to be employed to apply for citizenship. There is no employment requirement.

I'm sorry I don't know about the fee waiver requirements It may or may not depend on whether they claim you as a dependent But I don't know if even that matters..

I am not sure about 10 years of being unemployed, but the N-400 form require info about Employment or School history in the last 5 years. Anyway, I was unemployed at my citizenship interview and it was not an issue. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

From what I have read through many forums, unemployment indeed has no role to play during the process. I did go to school and had jobs but that was more than 5 years ago.

Maybe someone with the same experience who was unemployed for a long period of time at the time of the application enlighten me on the issue?

Thank you very much again for your responses.

You are really worrying over nothing. There is absolutely no requirement for employment in order to become a citizen. You can be a 45 year old man who has never had a job in his life and you can still apply for citizenship.

I don't know where you got the information that you need to be employed; you don't. No such requirement exists in the N400 instructions, the USCIS Policy Manual, or the Naturalization Guide.

Your unemployment may affect whether or not you will ever be eligible to qualify for social security benefits; but that has nothing to do with natutalization.
