Hello -I am inline for Interview which is not yet scheduled. When I filed N400 application, I did not check the Name Change option. However, I have decided to change both my first and last name at the time of citizenship approval.

1. Can I ask for a name change in the interview even though I did not specify name change in my application ?

2. If I do get a name change , what document will I get to show that I changed my name ? I have some business and property interests in India, and I need to be able to provide official name change document whenever needed.

Thanks in advance

1- Yes. Just tell your interviewer and he will have you fill out the appropriate forms at the interview.

2- You will get an official name change certificate along with your natutalization certificate. The name change certificate will show your current legal name and your new name and will be signed by a judge. Your naturalization certificate will only have your new name on it.

Note that this may cause a slight delay in your application because you will have to be sworn in at a judicial ceremony. Dallas conducts same-day administrative ceremonies (if you are lucky enough to be given that option) but if you change your name you will have to wait for a judicial ceremony.
