Travelling with I-797 receipt, no green card

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question.

I was granted a two year green card when I married an American citizen. Last year my purse was stolen with my green card in it and I never replaced it because it was a few months from expiring anyway so I just waited until I could apply for the ten year card. That application went fine, I had my biometrics taken and received the I-797 receipt that said my green card was extended but my new green card has not arrived and I had to leave for Europe due to a family problem. I am currently in my home country with my infant daughter (she's American), due to go back to the States in three weeks and now fretting that US customs will not let me back in because the receipt is only useful with the expired green card which I of course don't have. i, perhaps stupidly, assumed the receipt alone was all I would need for proof of my resident status.

What should I do?

Obtain a transportation letter from your nearest US embassy. Your will need to make an appointment and appear in person.

The letter, if granted, will allow you to board the aircraft and enter the US. Without the letter I don't your are getting in.

Thank you for your reply. I will do that. The embarrassing thing is that I had to go to the US embassy and get a transportation letter last time I visited my home country because of my lost green card. I worry when I show up again they will think I do not take their laws seriously because that will be twice I have travelled without everything I need and had to go to them requesting special documents to get back home.
