ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Police are turning their attention to parents after a recent increase in crime involving young teens. They're sending a warning to guardians: take responsibility for your kids, or you could end up in court.

Officers started using this new tactic following a shooting over the weekend. Police say one group of teens shot at another group of teens late Saturday night. A 16-year-old boy was hit in the foot. The shooters got away, but officers were tasked with finding the guardians of the victims. When they found them, police say, none of them knew where the kids were at the time of the shooting. So, they were issued summonses for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The shooting was just one of several involving young people within the city of St. Louis in recent months. And, young teens were also recently involved in a string of violent robberies downtown.

In one case, a group of girls, ages 12, 13, and 14 were arrested for attacking women and robbing them downtown. The 13-year-old suspect was also pregnant. And, within that same week, a group of boys in school uniforms reportedly brutally attacked a lawyer who was walking on 10th Street near Olive.

It was after those cases that police started brainstorming on how to help fix the problem, and they decided to be more aggressive about holding the parents of these teens responsible.

"We just want the parents to be back in the loop, we don't think that's a lot to ask, we just really don't," said St. Louis Police Capt. Daniel Howard. "And so there are laws on the books that help us address that and we're going to start using them. If you neglect your duties as a parent or a guardian, you allow these 13-year-olds to be running the streets and committing crimes then you're going to have to answer to the judge."

The citations that were issued Saturday night generally carry a fine. But, police say they could pursue misdemeanor charges against parents in the future.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

It boggles the mind why race-baiters and cry wolf racism folks will resist attempts to address this pervasive problem. Having role models like this help to perpetuate the problem.

It's amazing what a little attitude of bootstraps and accepting responsibility for where you are and where you wanna go in life will do for you. When it's lacking, it also provides the explanation as to why your wheels just spin and go nowhere.

Until you walk a mile in another person's shoes...
