what happens if we have our civil wedding outside of the United States and we begin to process the legal petition and then 10 months later we have our religious wedding also outside of the States (while the petition might still be in progress) can we face a problem doing this?

We did the same. A small wedding with just one more person at the city hall and after that we started the cr-1 process. Now we hope that on April 11th everything is done, cause thats the date from our big wedding day with all our friends and family. We hope i can stay in the US after that

No Issue... it's a big plus if its happens before the interview .. for India CO usually ask if you have done religious ceremony after registering the marriage through Civil marriage Act.. they would like see the pictures.
