Passport expires in 2008

Hey Canadian VJers,

My passport expires next year, and I have already applied for AOS and EAD. When I apply to renew my passport, what happens to the pages in my current passport with the K1 visa and I-94 (and I-551 stamp, if I get it)? Will I need those in the future? Will I need them for removing conditions or other things?

Any input will be highly appreciated!

My passport expires next year as well - at about the same time as I am filing to adjust my status! I have debated letting this passport expire so that I don't have to include it when I send my new application in, or sending it in early enough - and requesting the old one back! - so I get it back in time in case I need to get the extension stamp in it once my greencard expires. And if that isn't bad enough, I don't want to be without a passport at any time in case I have an emergency travel need back in Canada! It is a long enough drive so if necessary I wouldn't have to fly, but without a passport I am not sure the US would let me back in! Geeze, they like to make things difficult:-). So, yeah, I am thinking about what to do as well. I guess we don't really need the K-1 visa anymore, but I want to keep it!

Some answers:

  • You have heard of removing the I-94 (and/or visa) before sending in the passport? This is already commonplace with those on temp work visas (or F-1's).
  • As for the I-551--once you have the plastic (semi-perm, conditional) GC in hand, this is done with; some cases, no stamp is given (as in Pras' case)

Plus you can request getting your old passport back. I did this the last time and still have my old passport they returned to me with holes in it. But at least it shows all the INS stuff from back then if I ever needed it again...
