Is the first time you find about your case when you receive a letter in the mail, or do they email you? They just received my packet today

They won't email you, but once you receive your biometrics letter you can use the case number at the top to check your status online. You should receive your NOA1 (1 year extension letter) before the biometrics letter, but the case number on that letter will not work on the USCIS site to check your case.

I don't remember exactly, but it couldn't have been more than a week or two. I remember it came quick.
