Police confirm a 55-year-old man and a 16-year-old were assaulted in the area at that time.

It is a shame what Johnsons great society is responsible for.....

That kid who killed a police officer and is on the FBI's most wanted list. Who's responsible for that?

I thought it was a 70 year old man?

So it is the 70 year old mans that is getting his face kicked in who is the problem. Because he has a carry permit to protect him self from 4 or 5 20 year old thugs that want to reconstruct his face in a big way... got it.

Don't do this. He'll leave and take his ball with him.

Hmm, I don't recall posting that. Please point out where I did.

I believe I stated that more guns equals more firearm deaths. That seems like simple math to me. The primary purpose of firearms is to kill people efficiently, is it not?

ETA: I've always been on the fence with the whole gun thing. You and few other posters here have convinced me that private citizens shouldn't own firearms. Thanks for helping me clarify my position on the matter.

Same here. I was never as adamant for tighter gun control until I started posting here on a regular basis and reading some of the stuff posted by the VJ gun aficionados.

damn i didn't know you went all the way like that. how does that happen in a country where guns are everywhere? i'm just asking because i'm no fan of guns, i don't own them but i don't see how we can take the right to own them away from law abiding citizens when there are so many guns out there in the hands of criminals and very very scared people...

I personally want to carry a baseball bat for protection:

Or if I'm feeling special, a pair of hammers:

I don't think there is a way to get the guns off the street, the damage is done in that regards. But I do think it is possible to make some changes for the better going forward. Start enforcing the existing gun laws and make one set of laws for the entire country, not on a state to state basis. Mandatory background and mental health checks with every gun purchase. Also make all new guns that are manufactured "smart guns", guns that will only fire when in the hand of their owners or rightful users.

For the record, I'm really not in favor of a complete gun ban, I do believe in a person's right to defend themselves with a gun. But what we have today is way over the top paranoia and I'm not sure who is worse anymore, the so called 'good guys with guns" or the actual criminals.

Like I said the more and more I read here, I can't personally justify private gun ownership. That's just my opinion. That said, it's a little late to do something about it with 330 million guns in circulation. I'm a realist.

Plus I'm somewhat perplexed at how the religious/gun nuts have taken over the republican party.

yeah, i agree - it's too late.

Agreed. I think that the result of the proliferation of firearms in the US is a society that is generally less safe.

I think it makes people (including the police) more willing to shoot others a general assumption that they are armed.

I already knew there were bad guys with guns out there and I really don't consider that threat bad enough at this current time for me to be armed. But knowing the attitude and paranoia of the so called good guys with guns, I believe the risks of being confronted by someone with a gun have at least doubled.

tbh i feel safer just knowing that if i wanted to go buy a gun, i could. i agree with everything you said, except i don't really think it's possible to make swift changes at a federal level on any issue. our government is limping at a snail's pace. but suggest bombing somewhere in the middle east, we'll make that ish happen quick.

There's your answer. Two things our country was founded on, religious freedom and firearms. It's sad that folks here like to slam Islam, yet don't realize they're about a hair's thread away from becoming exactly what they skewer.

As I say the paranoia is quite disturbing.

LIB doesn't like to be called paranoid, but that's what comes across in his posts - the idea of imminent threat, that around any corner a violent offender could jump out and kick your head in, that there's a real threat of being bushwhacked and beheaded by religious extremists, that a person who doesn't train or arm themselves is irresponsible.

That's just not a mind-set that I can relate to.

I think that those who see guns as a 'safety device' in that way have a callous 'hair-trigger' attitude to life.
