WOW!

the more threads you read, the more question that pop into your head!

I live in Toronto, get the Child Tax Credit and the National Tax Benefit (or whatever they are calling baby bonus this year), I see you can still get EI when you move to US on K1 visa--are we still eligible for the Child Tax Ben too? When I've filed for income tax this year the ammount of my combined CTC and NTB will be pretty good--3 kids and on Maternity leave for most of 2006)

it would be a handy sum of money till I can start working.

Any help much appreciated-eh!?

Sorry Angel,

You won't be able to receive the CTB when you leave Canada:

"4. Can I get the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB)?

To get the CCTB, you must meet all the following conditions:

* you must live with the child, and the child must be under the age of 18;

* you must be the person who is primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child;

o This means you are responsible for such things as supervising the child's daily activities and needs, making sure the child's medical needs are met, and arranging for child care when necessary. If there is a female parent who lives with the child, we usually consider her to be this person. However, it could be the father, a grandparent, or a guardian.

* you must be a resident of Canada; and

* you or your spouse or common-law partner must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months."

Well, technically, not until you file your exit taxes the following year or if they mail something to you prior to then that is returned to them. In the first case, they will send you a bill - or deduct from your refund - any overpayment made to you for CCTB for which you were ineligible. In the second case they will freeze payment to your account until you get back to them with a change of address - and that will then trigger the overpayment paperwork and you will receive a bill. Quite honestly, it is not worth the hassle no matter the money involved. You should include notifying CRA of your date of departure from Canada and file a change of address with them as part of your 'to do' list when emigrating from Canada to the US.

yep, i had to repay a GST rebate that was direct-deposited to my account once they found out I was no longer a resident. You are better off just calling them and telling them when you leave, saves a lot of hassle.

Yeah.. you are not going to pull a fast one on CRA... if you get money from them for which you are not eligible to get, they will send you a bill to pay it back... better to try to cut the spigot at the beginning, but sometimes they don't get word of it... this is one reason why it is good to keep your Canadian bank account active until everything is settled in Canada including your tax situation...
