Exactly.

All we need now is for someone to say it's all BS because they were white and poor ;-)

It's not BS, because it exists. There were major differences before, there are still differences now. There will be some differences in the future.

But not all of it is due to race. And living in various states of poverty is partly a choice; I say partly, because some people choose to rise above it, others opt to remain where they are. Before Marvin jumps in, I will say that is admittedly harder for blacks to get out of that hole than whites, at least in the past. Today, not as much, because I know LOTS of folks who qualify for government assistance when it comes to education. Get an education, you get a better job. Get a better job, more pay, etc. etc. etc.

Next someone will say that a black person can't get the same paying job as a white person, and while that is true in some cases, there are jobs that hire people based on an online resume system that knows nothing of a persons color; in fact, sending a pic to those application systems automatically disqualifies one as an applicant.

I haven't been in school in a long while, but I'd wager that education opportunities for all colors are more equal today then they were 30 years ago. Good grades start in elementary school, meaning with mom and dad at home pushing kids. I know I push mine, and I'm sure Marvin pushes his. At the college entry point, I'd say the playing field has leveled considerably in the US today. I'd at least welcome discourse on that topic.

A job based on an online resume and no face-to-face interview? Fascinating. Tell me more.

Let me clarify... one is selected for an interview without regards to race. I doubt anyone would ever hire a person without a personal interview. that would be most stupidester.

USAJobs is one I am most familiar with.

I can't speak for the author - but again if you look at the position many black Americans occupy in society - living in poverty, broken families, life outcomes that end in jail (or an early grave) there are only two conclusions that can be reached.

One of those conclusions is racist.

The other is that these racial/class inequalities exist as a legacy of the racist policies of America's past.

Some say it is racist, and while there may be an element of truth to that, depending on the source, there is also an element of truth to it. But some many don't want to talk about that.

Where are these KKK marchers and looters rallying for the cop? I haven't seen them on CNN. I'm pretty sure that would be the top story. So basically you have no valid response to the question, so just throw a grenade?

I've only heard of it happening once. For a $25/hour part-time "internship" program. Which I found totally shocking. However, they did fire more than half the people they hired at the end of the first week.

I've been hired multiple times in this fashion. What's the point of a face to face interview? Have a phone interview, and that's that. Must be because I have white sounding name.

I assumed you meant they were rallying. Like in the streets rallying. So BFD, some hate group is putting together funds to further it's own agenda. As has been pointed out here, the KKK has become irrelevant in recent times.

You're missing the point - we're talking about the playing field being fundamentally skewed against a large section of the black population in the USA. That overt institutional racism, in some parts of the country took place relatively recently and that this (along with the legacy of how the black population was treated in the 18th and 19th centuries) has a lot to do with the social strata in the country now.

I don't think that's an unreasonable or inaccurate statement. Of course, what that means to communities and individuals across the country is open to interpretation.

We're saying that people who haven't had that experience can't comprehend it from those that have - that includes middle class blacks and whites. You're not wrong to say that a good family background helps people to 'rise above' the limitations of their background. But at the same time, you have several generations of people who don't feel enfranchised by the establishment - the government doesn't represent them in any meaningful way and they don't see any point in participating in society in the way that you might expect. What do you think that gangster rap is about? I'd say the message in it is fairly clear...

An 'element' of truth perhaps, but you have to be extremely careful how such arguments are made.

Personally, I think it's unreasonable to make wholesale assumptions about large numbers of people.

I have never had the pleasure of being hired without half a dozen (slight exaggeration, that) on-site interviews, often with people I'll never see or hear from once I'm on board. I envy your white privilege!

you wondered who would rally behind the cop who's rep's been tarnished, didn't know you didn't actually want an answer.
