Hi all! I am planning to do my POE just after my house sale closes in Canada (mid Aug) to avoid non-resident taxes. (CR1 visa good till Nov)

I plan to fly to US WITHOUT my belongings to get our new house we have set up and see what we actually need. No point in moving doubles of things. I will stay for a month or two and wait for GC. questions are:

1) Can I still bring my belongings in (i will put them in storage in Canada when house closes) after I do my POE..like 2 months later? (will fly back and get my car and moving truck and do permanent move) I believe you have 1 year to bring your household goods in.

2) How long is typical to get GC after POE these days?

I know stamp is a temporary GC but will it be ok to leave and come back with household goods if actual GC doesn't come?

Sorry if repeated question but couldn't find exact answer in forum.

From my understanding, you CANNOT re-enter the States until you have your GC. If you leave - you're stuck out essentially. Its a one time entry only. I know there is some form you can file for emergency travel, but without that.... Nada.

I think its a 6 month process give or take for the actual GC, but I'm unclear as we're not to that point yet unfortunately. I asked our attorney a while back but would have to shift through the emails to find the exact approximate time frame.

I believe you cannot leave on a K1 before you AOS. I am on a CR1 which is an immigrant visa. You are a resident soon as you POE. My visa is a temporary GC. We went that route because I knew I would have to leave and I didn't want to do AP.

You have 10 years to move your stuff so you are fine (1 year for a car however.)

You have a green card upon entry, (endorsed visa is temporary green card for 1 year) but it takes 1-3 months to get the hard copy green card either from POE or immigrant fee payment, whichever is later.

With the temporary green card you have all the rights and restrictions as you do with the hard copy.

Thanks! Well I don't think I will store the stuff for 10 years..but good to know LOL. The longer I wait the less stuff I think Im taking. OMG movers wanted $4500 and UHAUL $2600 + gas, and UPAK $4300. Sell the stuff and start over! Ok a few trinkets!

I already got my car modified so it complies.

Yeah it gets expensive. I wanted the smallest uhaul and ended up with a bigger one because it wasnt available. Same price... well gas was more in the bigger one. We brought more stuff than I wanted to and it took me almost a year to get it thrown out after the fact.
