My marriage is on the rocks and I'm getting ready to apply for citizenship. I was going to do it based on marriage but now I'm reconsidering and might apply based on being a PR for 5 years, since I've been one for almost 8. Could my husband block me or do anything to stop me from applying?

File by yourself based on 5 years of permanent resident. Just make sure you have all the docs from your current spouse you need or divorce him, and then file later once everything is clear. That way you don't need anything more from him since you will have the final divorce decree and that's that. Sorry to hear about your situation but it happens and we just move on. There's no hurry to file for citizenship and it's more straightforward once you have all of your personal situation sorted away. He can't stop you at all.
