Hi to all! I want someone's advice about my SSN . I applied for my ssn last month and the ssn staff here in USA says that I need to wait for a month to have it. Yesterday I received my ssn on mail but I found out that in my ssn they still put my middle name the time I was single that I know in the Philippines when we are already married we automatically have our father's last name as our middle name and then followed the last name of our husband. What will I do to change my middle name and use my father's last name as my middle name? Does anyone here has the same experienced as I have? please I really need help. I just want that my documents here to be uniform. Thank you and I will appreciate all your advices! GOD BLESS!!!

What middle name did u put in the application form? If you put your middle name when you were single, then they will follow the middle name you put in the form, but if you put your family name as your middle name and you put your hubby's family name as your family name then they made mistake for that. If you are using your hubby's name now, and the middle name is just the problem, it is not really a big deal in the US, only in the Philippines..so if you want to change that, I think you need to go back in the SSA office and bring your docs like MC,BC,Passport,GC (if you have)

When applying for SSN the SS office goes by the forms you submitted. You should have gotten a "receipt" that shows your final application from the data that the SS agent entered into the system. Do you still have that document. If so, compare it to what you actually received and see if there is a difference.

Here is an explanation (example) how they treat names when assigning SS numbers.

Filipp Minkin applies for an SSN card. He:

  • completes an SS-5 showing his name as “Philip Minkin;” and

  • submits a U.S. immigration document (an identity document) showing his name as “Filipp Minkin.”

  • does not provide any document showing his name as “Philip Minkin.”

  • does not submit any legal name change document.

The name to be shown on the card must agree with the name on the identity document submitted. SSA must show his name on the SSN card the same way it is shown on the immigration document provided. He says he wants to Americanize his name.

To get an SSN card in the Americanized version of his name, Mr. Minkin must submit a change document supporting a legal name change and showing his name spelled in the desired way (e.g., Certificate of Naturalization, court order for a name change, or a new immigration document in the new name).

Although, “Philip” and “Filipp” sound the same and appear to be the same name just spelled differently, the system, when screening names, treats them as different names.

SSA cannot issue the SSN card in the name requested because this is a legal name change request and Filipp has not submitted a name change document showing he legally changed his name.

I suggest contacting them via phone and discuss your situation and the available solutions.

You can call them toll-free at 1-800-772-1213. They will treat your call confidentially. They can answer specific questions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT, Monday through Friday. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call during the week after Tuesday.

How did you complete the SS-5 form? SSA doesn't know about Philippine traditions.

When you do your AOS make sure you complete all forms in your NEW married name, then when you get your EAD or green card go back to SSA and have the name updated. For now there isn't too much you can do.

Agreed with Hank. SSA will follow the middle name as is reflected on your passport, visa and I-94. They will also check your information on the DHS database based from your I-94. However, they are allowed to do a change on your last name (only, at this time), as it's legal based from your marriage certificate. There should be no problem once you show them your EAD/AP card reflecting your new middle name and last name.

Well that isn't true either. My wife applied for her SS card in her married name two days after we were married, no issue getting it in the traditional Philippine format.

It really boils down to whether you get an informed and better educated person or a "Forrest Gump" graduate... sadly there seems to be more Forrest Gump graduates at SSA.

Ok, then I got a "Forrest Gump" of a SSA employee then. They told me they always follow the DHS guidelines. Maybe one way of discriminating immigrants.
