Downtown Rally Pushes 'Robin Hood' Tax on Wall Street

Nurses picketed the downtown office of U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Tx) today to push for what is called a 'Robin Hood Tax' on Wall Street transactions to fund expanded social programs and to reduce income inequality, 1200 WOAI news reports.

"It's a small fee that would be added to all the investors in Wall Street," Registered Nurse Daniel Rubalcaba said. "It was Wall Street that sent us into an economic crisis.

The nurses said much human suffering around the country could be relieved by imposing the tax.

"The fee will be added to every transaction and dividend, at a rate of 50 cents per every hundred dollars," he said. "If you do the math, you can see that eventually this will raise billions of dollars."

Similar protests are being held around the state today to mark the 46th anniversary of the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"This is America's opportunity to help bridge the gulf between the haves and the have nots," Dr. King once said. "The question is whether America will do it."

The money, according to the nurses, could be used for 'economic justice' and to fund 'basic needs.'
