I-765? Needed When doing AOS?

I've read a lot of people here submit for I-765 for work authorization when submitting all the other AOS Forms. Yet I see nothing on the USCIS website about this being required. Should I also mail that in? why?

I-765 (EAD) is not a requirement, only optional as with the I-131 (AP), but filing for this is free/waived when done concurrently with AOS. Most people do it anyway because aside from the fact they can work asap or travel overseas just in case, the EAD/AP card has a faster lead time, which is typically ~ 2-3 months from filing and serves as a legal ID prior to the GC.
