The passport number is located on the Bio page (Photo page) in the upper right hand corner under the wording "Passport No."

Passport numbers vary with each type of passport. Brown passports have a letter followed by six numbers, while green passports issued before 2005 have two letters followed by six numbers. Passports issued after 2005 (including machine-readable and biometric passports) have two letters followed by seven numbers.

Airlines normally ask for the passport number. As Greenbaum said, it is written on the passport bio page, and you won't miss it.

I haven't booked any international flight yet asking for a visa number. But in case they do, it's the 8 alphanumeric characters printed in red, on the visa. Typically, it's 1 letter followed by 7 digits.

If you want to enter the information about your ability to enter the US, you have to enter the proper document type--i.e. visa or GC--and then enter its number. I think it helps during the boarding process, but I am not sure. I did enter this information when my wife travelled on Lufthansa and again for my MIL when she visited on a tourist visa. I still do not know what use it is, but it is available on some airline's websites.

There is a passport number (located below the words "passport number") and the visa number is the red numbers on the visa.

they didnt ask for the passport number..they asked for the visa number..which i take is the red number although the later answers on this tread made things confusing again..

In your original post you did not mention which you were looking for; passport or visa. Your question was "The number the airlines ask for when trying to book a flight online" which could be many different numbers. I gave you the simple answer which finally answered your question. If you had said the visa number then my answer would have been the red number on the visa.
