I want to make sure I'm correct on which amount shown on our tax transcripts I should enter as income. I'm filing an I-864 as the sponsor; my husband will be filing the I-864A as a household member to include his income. We have our three most recent tax transcripts including 2013, and all MFJ. We each have an employment letter to show current income, as well as pay stubs. The last time I filled out one of these I used my adjusted gross income from my 1040 returns and had no problems, but it seems like that has changed. Please correct me if I have anything wrong here!

On I-864:

  • Part 6, Line 5 (current individual income) corresponds to the amount shown on my employment letter
  • Part 6, Line 6.c. (current income from household member) corresponds to the amount shown on my husband's employment letter
  • Part 6, Line 10 (current annual household income) is the sum of the two amounts in the employment letters
  • Part 6, Line 13.a-c (total income as reported to IRS) corresponds to Line 22 (total, NOT adjusted for 1040) on our joint tax returns

On I-864A:

  • Line 10 (current individual income) corresponds to the amount shown on husband's employment letter
  • Line 11 (total income as reported to IRS) corresponds to Line 22 (total, NOT adjusted for 1040) on our joint tax returns

Since my husband was self-employed he is automatically required to submit a copy of his 1099 and Schedule C, despite our submitting transcripts, correct? And will I need to send in my W-2 forms to show my individual reported income since we filed jointly, or will that not be a requirement since we are submitting the I-864A?

If you are filing form 1040 A then you should enter Total Not Adjusted, but if you have filed 1040 EZ then you should enter Total gross income. And as long as I know if you are submitting tax return forms and Not IRS transcripts then you should submit your w-2s as well. Hope it helps.

Thank you, it does help. I am submitting transcripts, not returns. However, I heard that if you file jointly they request the W-2 anyway to be able to distinguish your income from your spouses. I'm not sure if this applies to our case since my husband is submitting his own I-864A. Should I send it anyway?

I would send W-2 anyway. As there is no harm in doing so.
