GED Equivalency

My son graduated high school in Scotland with generally very good grades, mostly 1's and 2's with a couple of 3's and one 4 in 8 subjects. He also recently passed with flying colors the college placement test for DeVry University and achieved higher than college grades for the core subjects and equivalent to a high-level high school pass in Maths which they said if he re-rook he would probably pass at college level he was so close.

A supposed "authorized" company looked at his high school exam certificates and said that he hadn't even passed the equivalent of the GED...OMG...I tried explaining how the high school system and exam passes works in Scotland but he was having none of it and refused to even listen. He did say he would return my check which to me indicates that he knows that he has not accurately recorded the results my son achieved from his high school final exams last year.

Anyone had certificates verified for GED equivalency with a company who were really legitimate and knew what they were doing? My son has been out of school now for 18 months and doesn't really want to sit the GED and I suppose why should he when he achieved great results back home?!

Any help would be very much appreciated.

How old was your sone when he graduated from highschool in Scottland?

Sitting the GED is not a cake walk. There are questions in there ranging from basic grammar to advanced algebra and trigonometry. Also some US history I think- its been while since I last saw one.

Why does he need a gED anyways, if I may ask?

He doesn't necessarily need a GED but at least needs a GED equivalency certificate to state that he has graduated high school with sufficient pass marks in his home country to have passed the equivalent of the GED here. Only because most colleges will not accept his own exam pass certificate because it's Scottish and not written with GPA's.

My daughter (from Canada) is attending college in Washington state. Her high school transcripts from Canada do not show a GPA either. She was able to register for college without having to even show her high school transcripts. She is in the Dental Hygeine program.

I found that very strange that they did not even need to see her high school transcripts.

She originally was going to attend a private college, and they did ask for her high school transcripts. So, I'm not sure what the reasons for asking for them or not asking for them are.

Was this person affiliated with one of the major credential-evaluation companies? Because to me it sounds fishy. Any of the reputable companies will know exactly what a Scottish Highers certificate looks like and what it means.

The only person on here that I know had theirs done was K1Spain, I think she used WES (World Education Services). There are two or three other major ones, but that's the only one I remember off the top of my head.

(Also, um, DeVry isn't exactly what I'd call a reputable university. I mean, it's a university the way Walmart is a department store. It's good at what it does, but I'd consider it more of a technical or trade school than a university. So it's good if you want to study to be an electrician or auto mechanic or draftsman—all very good fields and I don't mean to malign them—but it's not what I would normally think of as a university in the US.)

I had to prove I had my High school diploma for college here in VA. I used this company http://www.educationinternational.org/procedure.htm They were excellent, belive the fee was $75, plus $5 for each copy. They were extremely fast. I had the proof in my hands before they even cashed my cheque!!! As wel lthey automatically sent a certified copy to the school!! Was extremely pleased, and they answered my emails very quickly.
