Tax return question

I'm not sure if anyone else has had this situation (probably) but in the form for affidavit of support there's a checkbox for whether you have filed for the last 3 years AND attached the most recent year. Logically, that tells me I shouldn't check the box because although I am attaching last year's return, I only filed the last 2 years due to being a student 3 years ago. But bureaucracy is not always logical so I wanted to make sure with someone who has experience to know. Do I check the box or no?

Check it and add a statement as to why you were not legally required to file taxes for the 3rd most recent year. You can even put a line through the 'three' and hand-write 'two' above it.
