Dear All,

I have my PCC dated 1st October 2013. My documents are still under review at NVC. I guess PCC is valid for six months as per the Indian passport office site (Though mumbai consulate website says 1 year). If I get a Feb/March 2014 interview and visa gets stamped before March 2014, will I have to make travel arrangements before April 2014?. Do they check the PCC validity for entering USA?

No, I did not require any letter. You have to simply apply online by registering yourself on the passportindia.gov.in website. Following is the link on how to obtain PCC:

http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/online/pccOnlineApp

After applying, paying requisite fees, you will get an appointment date where you have to go with the documents and passport as per the below link

http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/docAdvisor/pccPassport

Hope this solves your query. This is the process for Mumbai. I don't know for other cities. I guess it should be the same.

Also you can see the PCC Faq's in the following link: (Q65 to Q71)

http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/online/faqServicesAvailable

My PCC took 2 months (august and september 2013) since my file had gone from passport office to police station for police verification (because last year I had applied for change of name on passport on tatkaal basis and they had not done police verification at that time). So the passport office person told me that it has to go for police verification since I want the PCC in the new name.

I am not sure if they check PCC validity in POE. but being in safer side, as per the indian passport site, better u apply for another PCC after the existing ones expires (that is after 6 months). So that you can hold both the PCCs You can show them at POE if they ask for valid PCC no matter which one is.

I haven't heard of PCC being checked or asked at POE. As far as i know PCC is needed for NVC and then for the interview at the consulate. Why would they need PCC at POE?

Thank you for your replies. I thought they need PCC at POE since they stamp the passport with the date when PCC was issued apart from giving a certificate. I am also confused regarding this. I agree with CresentMoon that it is better to take a fresh PCC post March 2014 incase they check at the airports (or maybe we can call at the passport office helpline/consulate helplines?). Anybody who has travelled to USA after PCC has expired??
