The Manila International Airport Authority will collect an additional P200 in terminal fees for travelling passengers starting January 1, ABS-CBN News reported Thursday.

"The P550 terminal fee that is being collected at present is for passenger service charge while the additional P200 fee is for security and development charge," MIAA General Manager Alfonso Cusi said.

Cusi said the new airport fee is expected to generate P700 million annually, which will be used to purchase state-of-the-art x-ray machines, non-invasive walk-through scanners and security vehicles.

Oscar Paras, MIAA senior assistant general manager, said the new additional fee was approved by the board of directors after a series of public hearings.

As of last week this was still on hold because the "Authorities" had not "agreed" on who was to collect and manage (embezzle) the funds. It only applies to foreigners traveling in the Philippines and Filipinos that are not OSFWs. Sounds like another foreigner taxt to me. How many year of corruption and scimming off the top will it take to get the needed funds to purchase said equipment? If this is so legal and for Airport equipment, why isn't it added directly to the cost of the ticket like here in the states?

Either way I will be there in 12 days and be prepared to pay the fee and will let everyone know if it is paid only on exit as advertised and where it is collected. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Ken & Maria
