HI everyone,

I'm anticipating getting my K1 visa interview/approval early next year..might be a silly question, but hopefully someone can assure me.

My passport expiration date is November 2015. However I noticed somewhere it said that one of the things to bring to the interview (and that the K1 visa goes in) is a passport that is valid at least 6 months after your intended stay in the US...well the intention of the K1 visa is to permanently reside there!

Should I renew my passport now before I get the new K1 visa (and then later, the green card) so it has a new 10 year expiration? Will t be an issue getting my K1 visa then green green card issued in a passport that expires in just over a year?

Thanks!

You still have 2 years before your passport expires. If you get approved next year, you still have another year. If you are worried that your passport will expire while in the US on K1 visa, can't you visit the Australian Embassy here in the US and renew your passport?

Yes I can renew passport in US at Australian Embassy I believe but these wording had me alarmed:

To schedule a nonimmigrant visa appointment, you must have the following information and documents available:

  • A passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date of at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions. If more than one person is included in your passport, each person desiring a visa must submit an application;

Seeing as my intended period of stay is...permanently...does this not apply for the K1 visa interview?

I think that applies to tourist, student & business visa applicants. K1 is considered as immigrant visa.

Since I can't edit my previously, prematurely posted comment:

If it's easy for your to renew your passport while still at home, why not do it? You could save USD6! Fantastic. wink.png

I'll answer my own question. Why not? One reason could be that you intend to change your name after marriage and if you can wait until after marriage to renew, it can be done with the name change. If that's not the case, there doesn't seem to be a reason to wait.

I personally just renewed my US Passport (I live abroad) to ensure that I'll be allowed back into Europe after my holiday trip home this Dec/Jan. It expires in June 2014, and that left less than 6 months validity from my arrival date. Maybe it wouldn't have mattered, but I like to be (over)prepared!

Maybe consider when you'll be using the visa? And judge from there.

Assuming you hold an Australian passport, below are notes for renewal in the US:

*Adult renewal (including name change): Lodge by mail or in person - If you are renewing an adult passport that was issued after 20/08/1986 with an original validity of two or more years, you may lodge either by post or in person. It does not matter if your passport is expired. The passport can be renewed before or after it expires. Price: USD224.

Note: If your previous passport was issued to you as a child, you must lodge in person.
