Hi VJ members,

I will be allowed to submit my citizenship documentation around December 03,2013. I've been reading and it seems that the whole process (ideally) takes around 5 months (Detroit office). I'm planning on going to Brazil during the month of June 2014. In theory, I should be done with the citizenship process around May 2014.

My concern is if I become a U.S. citizen I will have a month or less to get a U.S. passport which takes around 4 weeks to get it and I will need to apply for Brazilian visa (which takes about 7-10 days)

Is it possible to go through the entire immigration process and push back/delay the oath ceremony till after the summer?

From the USCIS website:

You may be able to participate in a naturalization ceremony on the same day as your interview. If a ceremony is unavailable, we will mail you a notice with the date, time, and location of your scheduled naturalization ceremony on a Form N-445, Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony.

If you cannot attend your scheduled naturalization ceremony, return the notice, Form N-445, Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony, to your local USCIS office, along with a letter requesting a new date and explaining why you cannot attend the scheduled naturalization ceremony. Failing to appear more than once for your naturalization ceremony may lead to a denial of your application.

Have someone declined the oath ceremony on the same day and postpone it for couple months? Is there anyone out there with a similar experience or similar issue? Do I have any other options (beside not sending the N-400 after the summer)?

Thanks,

Alan

Yes You can do it but it will delay your file could be with months. Why don't you just wait until you return from Brazil and apply or ask if they can do same day oath and then apply for an expedited passport you should have plenty of timeby then to get a visa. Oh can you say hi to Ronaldo and Ronaldino :D
