How to change status from student visa to permanent resident

My son came on a F1 visa and we are looking to change his status to permanent resident, any help on what I need to do . My husband is here after we went through the process of getting his visa approved, he's a permanent resident now. My step son is here going to school and he's 22

Only marriage to a US citizen would allow him to get a green card.

His LPR father can file an I-130 for him. It's an F2b case - LPR parent petitioning an unmarried son or daughter over 21 years old. There is an 8 years wait in this category.

Your son would need to maintain his student visa or be legal in the US on some other visa for 8 years before he can get a green card through his father.

His father becoming a US citizen would shave a year off the wait.

If he goes out of status, he will not be able to get a green card. Make sure he stays legal.
