Not sure it was ever "officially" resolved. Be consistent with what you tell them, it will get sorted out.

I can't tell you 100% for sure, but if it were me, I'd keep the same format all the way through.

It's however you want to do it but keep the same format all the way through immigration until you can change your name at the citizenship level.

Example 1/

We did it like this.

(first name) (second name) (third name) (fourth name) (fifth name)

First Name: (first name)

Middle Name: (second name) (third name) (fourth name)

Last Name: (fifth name)

On the Driver's License, Social Security card, K3, AOS and Naturalization immigration paperwork they do (first name) (second name middle initial) (third name middle initial) (fourth name middle initial) (fifth name as last name)

Example 2/

However my Egyptian in-laws for their immigration process just went with their first three names and cut out the last two names.

So it was (first name) (second name) (third name) (fourth name) (fifth name).

First Name: (first name)

Middle Name: (second name)

Last Name: (third name)

Cut off: (fourth name) and (fifth name) and didn't use it again.

Example 3/

I've even seen some do it with just the first two names when they have kids here.

So the Arabic birth certificate may say (first name) (second name) (third name) (fourth name) (fifth name) but for school and immigration here they'll put:

First Name: (first name)

Middle Name: (no names)

Last Name: (second name) which is their father's first name.

Cut off: (third name) (fourth name) (fifth name) and don't use it again.

For the Naturalization paperwork, which is the final step of immigration to become a US Citizen, is when you can change your name to whatever you want. Dh wants to change his name to his (first name) and his (family tribal name) for his last name, which is completely different than any of his names. However, because he's built a life here over the past three years and filled out paperwork for many official things like school, exams, driver's licence and social security he's thinking to just keep his name the way it is instead of going through and changing his name on all the paperwork again after the naturalization process. It's entirely up to you at that point.

The way you did it is fine too if that's how you want to do it.

Knowing what I know now I'd have just used Example 3 and made it really simple on ourselves when there is no need to include a bunch of names. Just his first name and his father's first name for his last name are good enough. It's been a pain to fill out paperwork with that many middle names when you don't have to and you can completely change your name at the naturalization level to whatever you want.

(first name) (second name) (third name) (fourth name) (fifth name)

First Name: (first name)

Last Name: (second name) which is their father's first name.

Cut off: (third name) (fourth name) (fifth name) and don't use it again.
