How long does it take for spouse of PR to become USC?

[PD is Current. 50]

I'm a PR and I can apply for USC this October.

My spouse will become a PR via F2A this June.

When can my spouse apply for USC? If :

a) I become USC by end of this year

b) I continue to stay with my PR status

Both that five years? or a) Takes 3 years?

The official document http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf seems to indicate option a) would take only 3 years.

The USC 3 year track seems like the ticket once you get the nod.
