I have some questions regarding my husband's medical exam and interview and appreciate any information you may be able to provide.

Husband resides in Nova Scotia but is traveling this week, to spend 2 months in US for a long awaited visit. Today we paid the IV fee and are excitedly (is that a word?) looking forward to our next steps.

He spoke with NVC and they informed him that he will interview in Montreal. They also gave him the names of the few physicians in Canada who can perform the medical exam. So, hubs contacted the physcian's office in Montreal asking how the process works. They said they could schedule his medical exam as close to interview appointment as possible, but that it takes at least 3 business days to complete the medical paperwork.

So, how does this work? Does husband have to plan on scheduling his medical exam a few days prior to his interview? This sounds like a lot of time and $, but makes more sense than traveling to Montreal twice.

Another thought we have is for him to travel to Toronto for the medical exam from US while he is here visiting (cheap flights from Nashville to Toronto). Then, when he has his interview in Montreal (we are thinking this will be after her returns home to Nova Scotia) just fly to Montreal for the day to interview.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense. So many thoughts running through our heads as we try to complete this process and utilize our time and $ efficiently.

Thanks!

Double check the medical office offers courier service for the medical. Otherwise he would have to pick it up unless you intend to stay in Toronto for 3-4 days to pick it up in person.

Dr. Seiden’s office in Toronto will courier the results in Canada for $50. Not sure about the US.

I didn’t want to spend the money on 2 sets of flights but the dates didn’t work out for us (me & 1 kid) to have the medical in Montréal and then wait for the results and interview. So we are flying to our medicals in Toronto this month and then flying to Montréal for the interview next month.

I think you’ll just have to figure out what works best monetarily and time wise for you guys.

I'm from Nova Scotia too! :)

From what I've read the most common thing is to go for Montreal for approximately a week (to make sure you get the results in time), have the medical first and have a few days in between then have the interview. So you would wait until you get the interview date then call the medical office & tell them your interview date so they can schedule the medical ahead of time.

I wish there was a place in Halifax to get it done! Would make it so much easier to just go to Montreal for the interview!

I had to fly to Montreal from Alberta. Because my interview was scheduled for a Tuesday, I ended up staying in Montreal for a week. I flew in the previous Tuesday, had my medical on the Wednesday and picked it up on the Monday. It's not ideal but was worth it in the end.

I was able to book the Best Western Hotel Europa for under $70 a night. The flight was pricier at $600.

Good luck!

I am the same as residentangel. Booked the same hotel (do it early or price goes up!! Mine was $90 average) Just staying in Montreal from May 27 to June 3rd which is interview day. You're normally done the interview by 9-10am which means you can check out after yer done the interview.

Is the Montreal interview only for the foreign/Canadian spouse or are both the American & foreign spouse required to attend? I'm a dual American-Canadian who just started the process for my husband (Canadian). We live near Toronto and are planning a move to the US this summer. Oh how I wish I had started this process sooner! I had no idea how complicated this process would be.

By the time my husband gets an interview, we will likely be living in the US - if he is allowed to stay with me and our dual-citizen kids as a temporary visitor. He would be going to Toronto for the medical exam, and likely driving from Toronto to Montreal for the interview.

I'm just wondering for planning purposes, if both of us are expected at the Montreal interview. I would like to be there with him, but not sure how things will work if I'm in the US with our kids and working down there.

Thanks for your help!

With Montréal spouses are allowed to attend but it’s not required or generally needed.

Being as you’ve been married a very long time and have the two kids you should be fine staying in the US with the kids.
