I've read one of the things to take when finally moving to the US is a copy of my medical records. My doctor of course will not give me a copy of my records but has asked for a fee before I leave and when I find a doctor in the US a copy will then be sent. Has anyone else had a problem receiving a copy of their own medical records? Could this cause some trouble for me when I do try and find a doctor in the US or is this standard practice? From what I've read others were just able to obtain their records themselves. Thanks for any help on this.

I had no problem getting mine I just asked for what they had on record to bring to my new doctor so they could establish a health history. No payment was needed. She gave me copys although I did have to sign a release form because they are patient confidential documents.

The doctor I have in the USA could of cared less about having it, They don't seem to keep a proper history on myself or my husband for medical records.

There may be a fee, depends on your doctor/office. I work at an optometric clinic and we charge for releasing medical records as it's "office property". Whether you want to get your records or not is up to you.

I had to pay around $300 for ours to be copied. That was for me and the kids. Nonsense as far as I'm concerned. I understand paying a fee of some sort but not THAT much. Your medical records must be provided to you as far as I know. I've never heard of anyone being told they can't have them. I would want to carry my own copy with me to present on my own. To be honest, I'm planning to take the time to scan our entire files so I have them to carry forward no matter where I go.

I asked for mine to be copied but never heard back before I moved. Now that I'm down here, the health company has been trying to request my records with written permission from me and they are just being ignored and not responded to (on the specialist and general doctor front). It's annoying. I unfortunately have a large amount of files due to my health history so not sure how many papers they'd actually need to copy. What I've done down here is just to tell them my medical history myself and they've been treating me based on that. Definitely not ideal but it is working so far. I suppose next time I get back to Canada I should bug my doctors about getting on top of that.

I asked for copies from my Cdn doctor - he charged me some rodiculous per page fee for his secretary to photocopy like 50 pages.

They were useless in the end because my new US dorctor gave me a complete physical and maybe leafed through them once. Otehr than establishing my current medications when I first came over, I'm not sure its worth it (and even then) unless you have a very serious medical condition. I came over with my preexisting endometriosis and ovarian cysts and they establish a whole new history for me anyway.

Coming ffrom Canada they know you've had healthcare, US Doctors want your business, I haven't heard of them refusing someone because they didn't have previous medical records

Good luck

Thanks for the input everyone. I was expecting a fee, just a little bothered that a copy won't be given to me but only sent after I find a doctor. Thanks again all.

You'll enjoy the US - its quite refreshing when they give you copies of everything and let you see what's in your file. In Canada I felt like I couldn;t ask and it was never divulged by my doctor, here in the US I am free to ask for a copy of whatever is in it - The emergency room last year gave me a full copy of everything I had checked and all results - it was kind of interesting reading

I didn't even think to bring my records - I only have one recurring medical problem and every time I have to go in I need to give them a history lesson! Next time I'm in Canada I should get my records (how stupid of me!)

Oh and as others have said, the medical system in the US is AMAZING. I have Kaiser (awesome) and they can schedule you very quickly even for a specialist, they give you copies of everything, and I can e-mail my doctor! How great is that!
